New art, new logo, new products, new website, oh my!

Here's what's happening at Jessica St. Clair Studio!

The COVID-19 crisis has shaken the foundation of businesses across the board, from the largest to the smallest (like me, just one person wearing all the hats), demanding we figure out how to adapt in order to survive in this ever-changing environment.  It also provides impetus to evolve and an opportunity to let our light shine the way ahead.

When all the norms of business abruptly came to a standstill, I hit the ground running energized with ideas of a new way forward that blend creativity with a core value of well-being, and began exploring channels beyond brick and mortar to share these items.  Art isn't just for the walls anymore- I'm excited to expand into applying my painting, photography, and graphic design work to all sorts of useful products for your stylish home and healthy lifestyle... good vibes by design!  More on that to come, but here is just a peek at a few of the new items on the way!

Behind the scenes has been a paint-flying, product-designing, picture-snapping, keyboard tapping whirlwind of creative activity!  Although you haven't seen much evidence on the surface yet, everything is in a state of constant forward motion with developing merchandise, researching print partners, testing products, and building a brand new online store (which will replace this website).

Like any massive undertaking, this one is not without a myriad of challenges to navigate, and of course the complicating ripple effects of COVID-19 are felt in every aspect of life and business as well.  While I can't yet predict precisely when the whole package will be ready to premier, I wanted to be open about the process of getting there, and let you know I'm really looking forward to the day I can share it with you!

In the meantime, Arts by the Bay Gallery has re-opened, and I'll be the FEATURED ARTIST for their next show!  Busy creating, painting, printing, framing... doing everything I can to make your visit to the gallery an uplifting and enjoyable experience in this time when we can all use a little art therapy!  Mark your calendar- "Good Vibes" debuts JUNE 26!  Check out the events page for details!

I hope you too are finding silver linings in these challenging times, and never forgetting to let your light shine!

2017 Upper Bay Art Festival

Mark your calendar for the Upper Bay Art Festival August 5th on the beautiful waters of North East, MD!  Along with a great variety of artisan vendors, I'm excited to exhibit a fantastic collection of nautical-themed fine art, and premier some brand new, never-before-seen pieces!  Enjoy a fun day of food, beer, wine and boats too!  Free admission!

 • Visit the event page on facebook

While I'll be showing photographic fine art at the festival, I've also been lending a creative design hand to marketing the event.  The 4' x 30' banner I was hired to design (pictured above) can be found stretched across Main Street in North East!  Also keep your eye out for the large Upper Bay Art Festival sign on the "Welcome to North East" event board (at the corner of Rt. 40 & Rt. 272) and another festival sign below Galahad Marine's sign near the entrance- all designed by Jessica St. Clair Studio!

"Journey" is a piece that is especially dear to my heart, so I thought I'd share the story behind the artwork.

Each time I walk this path, bare toes in the sand, connected to the earth, I reminisce about all the life events that have journeyed with me here.  From countless joyful hours spent building sand castles in my childhood, to soaking up the sun and surf as a teenager, to seeking solace here during life's more complicated challenges as an adult, this place is timeless to me.  Throughout these different stages, perplexing questions like "is this relationship working," "is a person I care about who has passed away okay on their new journey," "is moving the right choice," and "can I succeed in starting a business," just to name a few, have also accompanied me over this path.  The answers always seem to be softly revealed here, the place where I can quiet my mind and just listen.

One of the most pivotal moments of my life also occurred here.  I made my way up the path, across the dune, toward the sea as a single girl- just like so many times before.  And then, there on a beach blanket, the man of my dreams dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him.  My heart exploded with so much love and excitement it filled the sea.  Now this journey wasn't mine alone, but ours together.

Hopes and wishes for our future are as infinite as the horizon we gaze out upon.  Nostalgia for a lifetime of memories made here is imprinted in each grain of sand and carried in every particle of the salty breeze.  And with every cherished visit, this path is a precious reminder to be present in the joy of the journey at this very moment.

Perhaps this image will resonate with you as well, reflecting the many paths you've traveled to become who you are today, and the joyful anticipation you have for the journey ahead unified by the strength and support of a companion by your side.  Or maybe there's a completely different, wonderful way you personally identify with Journey?  Now that you know my inspiration for creating the artwork, I'd love to hear how you connect with Journey in your own experience!  Please feel free to comment below!

Prints of this image are available in a fantastic variety of sizes and styles, and make a particularly thoughtful gift for weddings, anniversaries, and just to let someone know what a special part of your journey they are.

Find this image in the Fine Art Photography/Nautical section of my website to place your order today! (Be sure to scroll down to "See All Products" for the complete selection, and choose a size that complements the rectangular shape of the image.)

Shop Small, Buy Art!

SHOP SMALL AND WE ALL WIN!  Think about it... Small businesses (in my case very small; a one-woman show with a head piled high with hats including photographer, framer, painter, designer, builder, planner, researcher, exhibitor, marketer, promoter, bookkeeper, office manager, delivery runner, tech admin, and more- whew!) value and require customers for survival as much as the air we breathe.  No matter how tirelessly we work, we simply cannot survive without YOU!

And in turn, the fabulous small businesses you enjoy that create the colorful fabric of the community you love can't exist without the creative vision and fierce determination of hard-working entrepreneurs willing to risk it all to offer you their finest skills, quality products and valuable services.

In order to thrive and contribute to the success of our community, we truly need each other.  Eat at your favorite hometown diner where they know just how you like your coffee, shop at that quaint little store with all the unique items you won't find anywhere else, enjoy owning handmade work by that artist who creates pieces you totally connect with, and we all win!
Shopping Small is a rewarding experience and I hope you'll join me in making it a point to SHOP SMALL this Small Business Saturday, and always!

Cauldron of Creativity Boils Over for Halloween! My life-long love of Halloween is a passion (ok, bordering on obsession)!  From the feeling of nostalgia that flickering jack-o-lanterns, crunching leaves and the smell of pumpkin-everything stirs up, to imaginations being energized to get creative, I love everything about this horrifying holiday!

Turning Halloween into a home-made event has always been my specialty.  As a kid I remember pounding on the low keys of my mom's piano while my Fisher Price tape recorder rolled, making my own horror soundtrack to set the mood.  I loved drawing haunted castles out of construction paper with little doors that opened with ghosts lurking inside, making Halloween cards and writing themed poems.  I even won first place in elementary school art class for a little girl pumpkin I made.  At 10 years old, receiving recognition for my artwork and an award of an assortment of art supplies meant more to me than that teacher will ever know.

While we outgrow all sorts of magical things that enchant us as children, I'm thankful the Halloween spirit still lives strong within me through adulthood.  I'm grateful to have an awesome husband who encourages me to unleash my passion and creativity, and the party-ghoulers who embrace celebrating this hair-raising holiday with us!  Here is a video I made for our friends who dared to visit St. Clair Asylum this year!  Enjoy!  (Be sure to watch with the sound on.)

Hooray for National Dog Day!

** For the best viewing experience and easily readable text, please click the video player's settings icon, choose 1080p HD and view full screen.  Images can also be individually viewed in the portfolio here. **

HOORAY for NATIONAL DOG DAY!  Let's give our incredible companions the appreciation they deserve today...and every day! From amazing service pups who can offer the disabled freedom, to canine police partners who put their lives on the line, to the drooling furry mass that melts into your couch cushions, dogs touch the lives of their humans in amazing ways. Give your pup some extra love and thanks today, and consider opening your heart and home to a furry sweet soul in need of the joy and comfort of a devoted family.

As I type this entry I'm listening to the precious little breaths of slumber coming from my fur-kid Molly on the other side of my desk, and thinking about all the amazing things she has inspired me to do.  I started photographing her the day my husband and I brought her home as a tiny pup, almost eight years ago.  Working together I learned to get the shot quicker and just let her do her thing, and she learned to be patient with me when it took extra tries to get everything just right (although I did catch some of her exasperated eye rolls on film, haha).  Some of the fun photos turned into holiday cards for our friends and family over the years, and then Molly and I decided we wanted to give dogs who weren't fortunate enough to have loving families some of the spotlight.

So, I began photographing shelter animals and learning their stories (many of which were heartbreaking), and working them into original creative designs for greetings of all sorts of occasions.  I wanted to present homeless pups in a fun, entertaining way that would help draw positive attention to the plight of shelter animals.  When I had enough artwork compiled, Bark Remarks™ "doggone funny greetings for a great cause" were launched with the very special mission of featuring and giving back to dogs in need.  On the back of each greeting, the recipient gets a personal note from the star on the front thanking them for their support, and letting them know a donation is being made that makes their tail wag.  The Bark Remarks™ collection is currently available on my website and in six locations in MD and PA, and I strive to continue growing their reach.

With the success of Bark Remarks™ greetings, I was asked if I could come up with a solo art exhibit complementary to the theme and mission of the cards.  My mind was whirling with ideas because I am passionate about the subject matter, and I poured myself into creating every design from scratch (just like the cards)- from photographing rescues and other special pups, to illustration, to graphic design to the words that flowed from my heart.  "Something to Bark About," a colorful exhibit of 12 poignant designs, welcomed dogs into the gallery opening night, sparked a community-wide celebration of four-legged friends, raised awareness for shelter dogs in need of forever families and amassed a kind donation for them from patrons and sales of my artwork.

Large framed posters of the artwork can now be seen coloring the walls of Toby the Golden Hero Gifts, a special store with a pay-it-forward motto, established by Debra Parkhurst, who's life was saved by Toby, the Golden Retriever she rescued.  The artwork flows into her second shop next door, Fred's Too, lovingly named for Toby's beagle side-kick.  Artwork from the "Something to Bark About" collection is available for sale in a variety of sizes from greeting cards to matted and signed prints to oversized posters.  I aim to expand the reach of this collection as well, so it's message can be enjoyed by many and it can continue to give back.

We celebrate National Dog Day at the studio today, and every day!  I'll close with a quote I had written while working on my art exhibit and reflecting on the love and inspiration so many precious pups have blessed me with:

"May all the dogs I've ever loved leave their pawprints on my heart,

their virtues in my soul and their fur on my pants."

-Jessica St. Clair

Custom Cover Image Design

Bam!  In the first two seconds of looking at this public figure's Facebook cover image you’re probably thinking: "There's a busy mom who has figured out how to be healthy and fit!  Wow, she looks awesome, I need to follow this page to learn how she does it!  And I value her expertise because her professional presentation tells me she's intelligent, hard-working and accomplished."

And that is the incredible value of investing in a well-designed cover image to represent your business.

In her initial cover image, my client had given it her best shot, clipping and pasting and adding text and colors and shapes, but felt the image she was using didn't represent her business and her message in an engaging and professional manner.  So she came to me for help.  By simplifying the layout and focusing on visually conveying the two important elements of her business, her message instantly became clear.  And the tone of her page became professional.

So take a look at the cover image on your business page and think about your visitors' two second reaction.  Do they get it?  Is it interesting enough to linger on for a few more seconds?  Are they so impressed with the quality of images, content and presentation that it's worth a scroll down to see what you're posting?  If you answered "yes," fantastic, you have an outstanding cover image that conveys you pay attention to detail in everything you do, and tells customers and clients they're in for a great experience working with you!  But don't fear, those who are shaking their heads and saying "no way, my cover image is a hot mess!"  I can help you step up your social media presentation with a powerful cover image that conveys the creativity and professionalism your business deserves!

To request a quote to have a social media cover image custom designed for you, please contact Jessica St. Clair Studio today!

Sharing Entrepreneurial Adventures with StoryCorps®

Small business owners Margit Pruett, Himal Rami and I were invited to share our experiences with StoryCorps®, America's oral history project in partnership with National Public Radio (NPR) and the American Folklife Center at The Library of Congress.  Although each of our businesses are very different, we had a valuable resource in common...the Cecil County Public Library's assistance in helping us launch and grow our businesses.  CCPL, a 2015 National Medal awardee for museum and library service, features The Small Business Information Center, providing guidance, tools and workshops at no cost to entrepreneurs.  In this conversation, we discuss how the library helped us explore and establish each of our businesses and the challenges and rewards of business ownership.
Dialogue took place November 20, 2015 at Cecil County Public Library in Elkton, MD.  Recorded by StoryCorps®.

Kicking Off 2016 with Alma-Mater Calendar Feature!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  Feeling really excited to embark on the adventures, experiences and creative opportunities 2016 will bring!  Thank you William Paterson University, my alma-mater, for featuring Jessica St. Clair Studio in your Alumni Calendar!  As a proud WPU graduate (Class of '02) I can attest the education, skills and experiences garnered earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree provided a key to the future that opened locked doors.
Like I said when asked what "Will. Power." means to me, "Will. Power. is a dynamic force within each of us, an active energy consisting of many ingredients: the support of our loved ones, the foundation our education provided, and our inherent motivation.  These things give us the will to pursue our full potential and the power to conquer challenges, aim high and reach for our dreams."
Make 2016 a fabulous year everyone- aim high!

Third Place Award for "Tinker & Toil"

It was as if all the factory tradesmen left for the evening after a usual day of work, never to be seen again.  Tools, gloves, paperwork, even boots left awaiting their return were slowly being reclaimed by the elements in the long-abandoned factory I was exploring.  The way the sunlight crept through a small window and illuminated this workbench seemed to breathe life and hope into these rusted old tools, and made me stop and wonder about all the decades they’ve rested there, and the hands that were the last to labor with them.

Long forgotten objects that have fallen victim to time hold such character and curiosity, a subject matter that enchants me.  Experiencing, capturing and conveying this moment has brought this secluded scene out of the darkness and into people's hearts, and I am honored that "Tinker & Toil" has been awarded Third Place in the 16th Annual Photography Show!

People's Choice Award for "Glide the Swirl"

An example of "Glide the Swirl" in a living room setting. (Interior design photo found on "Glide the Swirl" is one of those wonderful projects that inspired every moment from the time I dreamed it up in my head till it was something that physically existed.  I took the three photographs this image consists of over the course of years, and contemplated what I could do with each separately to make an interesting presentation.  Then it hit me that layering the rolling waves, stormy sky and seagull in flight together would create a really dramatic image, so I got to work and the ideas started exploding!  Such a striking scene deserves an equally unique and impressive presentation, so I split the image into halves and produced it on two gallery wrapped canvases.  Then I constructed a custom wooden plank backing with a natural, nautical feel and topped it off with a pop of texture and color with natural fiber rope.  With it's size, dimension, interplay of materials and striking subject matter, Glide the Swirl makes a fabulous focal point, as pictured in the example above.  (Interior design photo found on

"Farmhouse Macabre" on Exhibit, Receives Award

Although it was a bright sunny day when I shot this photo, the scene exuded a tangible creepiness. The crumbling homestead and the slow screeches of the rusted metal windmill (actually photographed in another area of the property) could have been straight out of a horror film.  To indulge in my love of Halloween and take the eerie vibe this location emitted over the top, I layered three photographs and multiple effects until the image was unmistakably and accurately spooky.
"Farmhouse Macabre" was awarded Honorable Mention at the CCAC Annual Juried Show, and is on exhibit through October 29, 2015!

Constructed three dimensional matting, which houses spears of beach grass, experimented with special fine art paper for a soft, almost watercolor feel, and also hand painted the frame to carry the rich colors of the photograph outward.  Available now and currently on exhibit at The Palette & The Page (120 East Main Street, Elkton, MD)!

Stepping Out: Artist Dresses for Comfort, Adds Accessories for Style

Thanks Cecil Whig for featuring me in your style section, I'm flattered!!!

Article & photos by Dara McBride • Published in the Cecil Whig 9/11/15

Who: Jessica St. Clair, 35, an Elkton resident who is a professional artist and owner of Jessica St. Clair Studio LLC.

You may have seen her work at the Cecil County Arts Council – which recently featured her “Something to Bark About” exhibit – or The Palette & The Page gallery. Sales from her Bark Remarks greetings allow her to aid the local shelter and rescue dogs featured in the works.

Personal style: St. Clair’s look is “fashionable-functional.”

“I like putting together outfits that allow me to comfortably move around when I’m busy working in the studio, yet are also stylish enough to drop by a gallery with artwork or meet clients to discuss a project without requiring a wardrobe change. Looking polished doesn’t mean having to dress to the nines, it can be accomplished even in jeans,” she said.

Although there’s no one person she looks to for style inspiration, she does admire the way female designers on home makeover shows “have a certain savvy for dressing comfortably enough to work hard without sacrificing style and sophistication.”

Wardrobe staples: St. Clair has a stockpile of camis in every color.

“I wear them alone, layer them for an extra pop of color and, in the chilly months, I put them under sweaters for an added layer of warmth and color,” she said.

Maxi skirts and sandals are her summer staples and jeans or fleece-lined leggings and boots are her go-to for winter.

Jewelry: The accessories are the most special part of the outfit for St. Clair.

“I have an appreciation for the time, effort and passion that goes into creating works of art, and it’s important to me to support other artists. Now I only purchase jewelry handmade by local artists, and have acquired some really amazing pieces,” she said.

Favorites include custom silver necklace pendants featuring her husband’s and her initials and special numbers by Kimie Ranken from Arts by the Bay Gallery, and a brushed silver cuff bracelet by Sta-C Peterson at The Palette & The Page.

What’s in her bag: Chapstick and a hairbrush.

Lifestyles: St. Clair grew up on the Jersey Shore and moved to the Elkton area when she and her husband, TC, took jobs at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

“I love the quaint little towns along the water here. My husband and I really enjoy celebrating special occasions with a fabulous meal at the Chesapeake Inn, a canal cruise on the Miss Clare, visiting the little shops in Chesapeake City and topping the day off with ice cream at Canal Creamery,” she said.

She likes capturing the area in her art too.

“It’s such a picturesque area to photograph and is even the inspiration of a collection I’m working on called ‘Vintage Charm.’”

While I was out and about ...

The Parklands at Cecilton, a 62-unit workforce housing complex that opened this spring, is hosting a public art show and reception on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. to show off newly purchased local art for the apartment complex’s community room.

Those who attend will be able to see the approximately 20 pieces of artwork purchased by an interior decorator hired by the project developer, Ingerman, to be displayed in the community room at the apartment complex.

Participants will also be treated to wine and cheese, a tour of a two-bedroom apartment unit and an opportunity to purchase local art that will be brought to the show by about 20 members of the Cecil County Arts Council.

Eighteen two- and three- bedroom apartments remain available out of the 62 total units, according to Parklands manager Dawn McCreary.

Cecil County Arts Council Executive Director Annmarie Hamilton said Ingerman purchased a variety of art, including large abstracts and photos, from Cecil County artists Martie Bolinski, John Dixon, Curt Lang, Jessica St. Clair and Tommy Torres.

It’s free and sounds like a fun evening, so why not give it a try?

"Downtown Elkton Goes to the Dogs- Something to Bark About"

Cecil Whig- July 10, 2015

By Sam Luvisi

ELKTON – The Cecil County Arts Council barks up a new tree with dog-themed festivities this Friday.

Based around art exhibition “Something to Bark About,” a collection of photo portraits of shelter dogs by Jessica St. Clair, and open show “It's a Dog's Life,” the council hosts its first furry-friend themed night. There will be an array of dog-themed features at 135 E. Main St. and throughout downtown Elkton from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday.

“It just kind of mushroomed,” said Annmarie Hamilton, the council's executive director.

After announcing the event, the council received many offers from community members to volunteer, Hamilton added. Some of the proceeds from the night will go toward A Buddy for Life, a private rescue operation that serves as the animal control agency for Cecil County.

“This has a lot of enthusiasm because of all the animal lovers,” Hamilton said.

In addition to the gallery opening, events include a K-9 unit demonstration from the Elkton Police Department, “Ask a Vet” with Dr. Mindy Carletti, the Kona Ice Truck, and dog treat and clothing vendors. Lunchlines, a local poetry group that meets at the arts council, will present poems about dogs.

Certain businesses will be participating in “Paws on the Pavement,” an extension of the event from the Elkton Chamber & Alliance and PAWS for People, a pet-assisted visitation volunteer services. Attendees are invited to bring leashed dogs into participating businesses downtown. There will also be contests and games for those who bring along their dogs, and A Buddy for Life will be showing some adoptable dogs as well.

St. Clair said she created “Something to Bark About” – featuring photos of dogs on colorful backgrounds with personal quotes about their lovable canine qualities – as a spin-off of her greeting card collection, “Bark Remarks.” Her mission is to feature and help dogs in need.

“In this exhibit I wanted to highlight the amazing qualities dogs possess and the precious life lessons they offer humans,” she said. She hopes her art and the event will inspire others to adopt and aid the dogs. “It's heartbreaking to hear the sad past some of these pups came from, and I hope showcasing their beautiful and resilient character in a creative way will help generate positive attention for them.”

She said photographing the shelter dogs was “a blast.”

“They instinctively ham it up and give me some of the most priceless expressions,” she said. “They can be the biggest challenge because they're an excited blur of fur, but they are definitely the most rewarding experience.”

The brightly colored backgrounds were created as a way to draw attention to the dogs' faces, said St. Clair.

“Especially their eyes, I felt it was important to have vibrant yet simplified backdrops to set them against,” she said. “I hand-drew doodles for an innocent, whimsical feel and used a different energetic color for each design.”

Inspiration for St. Clair's personal quotes came sitting with her own dog, Molly, she said.

“Along with memories of every dog I've ever loved, the personal quotes flowed out of my heart, through my hand and onto paper like music,” she said. “I wanted the images to really resonate with people, and I felt if they were set to words that are relatable and could tug a heart string, the impact would be even deeper.”

St. Clair said she hopes people “feel a sense of community, the value of creative expression, and the desire to do something good,” in viewing her exhibit, which will be on display until July 31.

“If they have a dog, I hope they go home and give it an extra big hug,” she said. “If they're interested in expanding their family, I hope this exhibit might inspire them to visit a shelter and give a dog in need the loving family it deserves.

“It's a Dog's Life” and related downtown Elkton activities are free on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. on Main Street in Elkton. Call 410-392-5740 for questions related to the event.

Something to Bark About In celebration and appreciation of man's best friend, the message of this artwork is surely "Something to Bark About!"

This project was so much fun to work on because it gave me the opportunity to combine my passion for art and design with my love of dogs, and create images that will definitely strike a chord with anyone who has been lucky enough to have a furry best friend...or has ever wanted one.

The artwork is vibrant and colorful and thoughtful, and each piece also features a truism from funny to philosophical inspired by dogs I've loved throughout my life.  I've combined photography, digital art, illustration, graphic design and typography mediums to create a truly unique and purely original collection.

This exhibit is a spin-off of my Bark Remarks™ greeting card line and shares the mission of featuring and giving back to dogs in need.  Many of the pups photographed for "Something to Bark About" are rescues or are in need of rescue, and I'll donate a portion of each of my artwork sales to local shelter animals in need of loving homes.

I hope you'll join me for the opening reception festivities Friday, July 10th from 5-8pm at the Cecil County Arts Council on Main Street in Elkton, Maryland!  K-9 demonstrations, local four-legged heroes, dog clothing and treat vendors, dog poems, music, refreshments and more will be part of this exciting event that is free and open to the public.  Bring your licensed and leashed dogs to participate in the family fun.  "Something to Bark About" will continue exhibiting through July 31.

"Artist Creates Own Niche by Combining Mediums"

Cecil Whig- March 23, 2015

By Dara McBride

ELKTON — When looking at Jessica St. Clair’s art, what you see may not be what is real.

But the feelings and emotions the works evoke are real to St. Clair. Through blending mediums, St. Clair is able to show the viewer how she sees a scene in her mind’s eye.

One piece – seemingly a photograph of a path to the beach – represents what St. Clair considers to be “the happiest place on earth.” But the blue sky with fluffy white clouds is a combination of three images. And the wooden sign that reads “Utopia” is created using a photo St. Clair took of an old building.

However, the process means the final image shows “the warmth, the joy that you feel when you’re here,” she said.

This month, St. Clair’s creations are on display at The Palette & The Page as part of the exhibition “Spirals, Curves & Wanderlust.”

St. Clair said she feels like she was born doing art. Although no one else in her family is a professional artist, she said she comes from a creative family that supported her passion.

“From the time I was a toddler – big enough to hold a crayon – I was creating,” she said.

It’s hard to find one word to describe St. Clair’s work. She combines photography, digital art and graphic design to create. The process should appear “seamless,” she said.

Her work starts with her own photography. St. Clair said she loves being out in nature and finds peace by being alone with her camera.

One piece in the current collection shows a hosta plant dripping in dew that she photographed in the morning in her own yard. But St. Clair’s rendition shows a black and white plant at night, with a sliver moon in the corner and purple water drops falling off petals.

“It looked dreamy, so I wanted to capture that,” she said.

That image is presented on aluminum, but most of her work is printed on canvas. She said she likes the “fine art” quality the material lends to the subject.

Work on display now includes images from Paris and the West Coast, as well as closer to home.

St. Clair grew up on the Jersey Shore, and many of her pieces speak to a love of all things nautical. She moved to the Elkton area when she and her husband took jobs at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

“I’m so happy to be here now,” St. Clair said of the arts community in Elkton. She recalled stepping into The Palette & The Page last summer and thinking, “I need to be here.” Her fine art can regularly be found on the gallery’s walls. The business also sells her Bark Remarks Greetings, a collection of cards featuring humorous four-legged subjects.

After being a graphic designer for 10 years, St. Clair said she wanted to create work not made to fit someone else’s specifications.

“I enjoy that,” she said of graphic design. “But I love the fine art end of this so much that I missed it.” She now pursues her craft full-time through her business Jessica St. Clair Studio.

Her business’ tagline is: “Art transcending perception.” She said she hopes others see her work as “bold” and “interesting” or “colorful” and “emotional.”

“I like to have a different take on things,” she said.

“Spirals, Curves & Wanderlust” will be on display through March 27. The event is free and works are also for sale in the gallery. The Palette & The Page is located at 120 E. Main St. in Elkton. For more information, contact 410-398-3636 or visit

Take a Video Tour of Wanderlust

Journey backward in time, forward to Spring blooms and across the sea to a Parisian afternoon!  Wanderlust features mixed media fine art photography and digital art uniquely presented on a variety of mediums including canvas, aluminum and pearlescent paper.

This is my first featured artist exhibit, and I'm so excited to have the opportunity to share work that has been years in the making!  With images spanning from my own front yard to Europe, the subject matter is vast.

Some pieces are produced exactly how the image was captured through the camera lens, and others incorporate layers of photographs and digital art to create an entirely new scene.  I also really enjoy experimenting with applications to produce my artwork in ways that both compliment and enhance the images.  Some pieces lend themselves to the textural, almost painted quality that canvas provides while others really shine and come to life against the metallic property of an aluminum background, and there are those that look best against crisp matting behind glass.

Wanderlust serves as a beautifully diverse collection of styles, sizes and subjects so there is something special for everyone to connect with and enjoy.

See the exhibit at The Palette & The Page March 3-27, 2015!  Mounted, matted and signed prints (unframed) are also available.  Interested in having an image from Wanderlust produced to your specifications to perfectly compliment your space?  They are all available in the Fine Art Photography section of!  Questions, comments or commissions- don't hesitate to contact me!

Advice for Success in a Creative Career

Enjoyed sharing my journey and process with Art students from Rising Sun, Perryville, North East and Elkton High Schools this morning at The Cecil County Arts Council!  The students studied the work on exhibit for the 15th Annual Photography Show, and joined in a guided critique.  Then photographer Joe Gilmore and I each spoke about our professional careers and how we arrived where we are today.  I hope they will take my advice to devote 110% to everything they do, dare to be different, pursue a college degree, and never, ever let anyone try to convince them they can't make a lucrative career out of being an artist!  Wish them much success in following their natural talents and pursuing creative careers!  I left them with a quote that has helped guide every professional decision I've made in the last couple years, and hope it will resonate with them as well- "Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love.  It will not lead you astray." -Rumi

10th Annual Chesapeake Support Our Heroes Gala

In support of Fisher House, a "home away from home" for military families to be close to their loved ones during unexpected illness, injury or disease, Jessica St. Clair Studio, LLC is donating "Chesapeake Beacon" to the 10th Annual Chesapeake Support Our Heroes Gala.

As a military wife, I understand the incredible sacrifices our soldiers and their families make, and support the mission of Fisher House.  Every major military medical center has at least one Fisher House, which serves as a comfort home that enables families to be close to their loved ones while hospitalized without fee for lodging and transportation.  Fisher House also provides scholarships to military children and operates the Hero Miles program, which uses donated airline reward miles to provide tickets to military families to fly to the bedside of their ill or injured soldiers.

Funds raised at the Chesapeake Support Our Heroes Gala this year will be donated to Fisher House in honor of MG Harold ("Harry") Greene.  August 5, 2014 MG Greene was tragically killed by hostile action in the War in Iraq.  He was an integral part of Army organizations both my husband and I worked for, and a deeply respected and admired leader.

Transition to Autumn Happy first day of fall!  "Transition to Autumn" captures the timeless feeling of a late summer afternoon giving way to a crisp autumn evening, as the warm hues of the season dance in red, green and gold and a trodden path in the sand winds through the lush foliage and over the dune to the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

This photograph is especially meaningful to me because it was taken on an impromptu drive down my most favorite beach road, requiring nothing more than bare feet, a camera, and the little bit of sunshine left in the beautiful day that was drawing to a close.  I was alone to quietly enjoy this nostalgic site, which has remained perfectly unchanged in my mind since childhood, in peace and solidarity.

Did Super Storm Sandy affect you and your most treasured place along the shore?  Please also be sure to visit my project documenting the resilient character of the Jersey Shore shining through the devastation of the storm's aftermath in the Battered by the Sea Collection.  Five especially striking pieces were chosen from this collection, produced on canvas, mounted, framed, and donated to Governor and Mrs. Christie for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.  In an excerpt from her letter to me in recognition of the artwork, Mrs. Christie commented, "We are so fortunate to have these unique portraits from a true Jersey Girl!  Super Storm Sandy caused unimaginable devastation throughout our Garden State, but thanks to positive and optimistic individuals like you, we aim to come back stronger than the storm.  Thank you again for giving your talent and energy to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund."  I'm happy to offer support in the most creative way I know how, and will continue by making a donation to the fund with each piece of artwork purchased from the Battered by the Sea Collection.

Buzz By It's amazing how beautiful even the simplest things can be when we are aware of and in appreciation of our surroundings.  On a quick run out to the mailbox I noticed this interesting fellow enamored with my lilies.  Couldn't take my eyes off him as he darted from one petal to the next, buzzing out of sight then zooming back for more.  Not sure what kind of insect he is (hopefully a do-gooder!), but his fleeting visit is forever frozen in time.  Nice reminder to stop and smell the roses once in a while...or in this case, the lilies!

"Trichotomy" on Exhibition  Trichotomy is set to show in the Interpreting the Shadow exhibition!

Join me for the Opening Reception Fri. July 18, 5-7pm at the Cecil County Arts Council! (135 E. Main St., Elkton, MD 21921)

About the exhibition theme: "Carl Jung once wrote this of the Shadow, defined as the unconscious part of one’s brain: '…in spite of its function as a reservoir for human darkness, or perhaps because of this, the shadow is the seat of creativity.'  Artists are encouraged to use this theme as permission to explore dreams, visions and all manner of impressions held below the surface." -Cecil County Arts Council

Trichotomy is an abstract self-portrait that investigates the convergence of nature, spirit and human forms as experienced in the recesses of the mind.  Please join Jessica St. Clair Studio, LLC in experiencing a wide variety of artists' creative translations of Interpreting the Shadow on exhibit July 18-August 8, 2014!

Tranquility TranquilityTranquilityA lifeguard stand proudly waves an American flag and peacefully overlooks the aqua blue water of the Atlantic Ocean as a dolphin swims by along the shore of Ocean City, Maryland. It's so important in this busy world, in our hectic lives, to step back and just breathe.  To step away from our anxious thoughts of the many tasks that need to be accomplished when days just never seem to have enough hours, and realize that in this moment there are so many incredible gifts that could easily be missed because we are too preoccupied to notice them.  Think about how the breeze feels on your face right now.  How the sun warms your skin at this very moment.  Tune in to the sounds that surround you, like a distant symphony of nature, machines, and conversation, and then listen closely to the gentle rising and falling of your own breath.  Take a moment to just "be" and enjoy the tranquility from within.  When you're centered, it's effortless to see and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you, your persona exudes a cheerful serenity, and your state of well being becomes contagious!

This photo was taken on the dazzling beach of Ocean City, MD.  Although surrounded by a cacophony of noises and activity, being centered allowed me to appreciate and capture the grace and tranquility of this perfect moment.
